VRT

Vlaamse Radio en Televisieomroep (VRT), the public broadcaster for the Flemish community in Belgium, uses Agility for an automated media production system for repurposing news broadcasts for the Web, set-top boxes and eventually 3G mobile telephones. VRT uses Agility to simultaneously encode news programming into Windows Media and MPEG-4 streaming formats, as well as MPEG-2 for high-quality content archiving. These formats enable VRT to deliver news to broadband users via PCs or set-top boxes, and to deliver an innovative "video slide show" multimedia experience for low-bandwidth users by encoding frames every few seconds. The VRT contract is via Avid Belgium, Anystream's in-country authorized reseller.

The VRT solution takes advantage of Internet technology throughout its media workflow, leveraging an IP network backbone for routing media throughout the broadcast-to-Web publishing workflow. At the center, the customized Agility system directs and controls the flow of media between Sony and SeaChange broadcast servers, Avid editing systems and VRT's proprietary asset management system.

Editors in the VRT TV digital news department use a customized client interface to shuttle tape, mark in and out points, add clip metadata and submit the encoding job. Agility then switches video and SDI signals through the IP router to available Agility media acquisition units, enabling media capture, encoding and distribution to begin.
